A woman’s hormones shape her cycle, fertility and long-term health from the teenage years through menopause and beyond. This guide explains the most common hormonal concerns — PCOS, menopause, abnormal bleeding and cervical health — and when to seek assessment, so you can tell what is normal from what deserves attention.
Why hormonal health matters
Hormones such as oestrogen, progesterone and androgens control the menstrual cycle, fertility, bone strength, mood and metabolism. When they are out of balance, the effects can range from irregular periods to fertility difficulties and menopausal symptoms. Most concerns are very treatable once correctly identified.
PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)
PCOS is one of the most common hormonal conditions in women of reproductive age. It can cause irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth and difficulty conceiving. It is managed with lifestyle support, medication and, when needed, fertility treatment. Learn more from our PCOS specialist clinic.
Menopause
Menopause is the natural end of menstrual periods, usually around the early 50s. The years of transition (perimenopause) can bring hot flushes, sleep and mood changes, and other symptoms that are very manageable. Our menopause clinic offers individualised assessment and care.
Abnormal uterine bleeding
Periods that are very heavy, prolonged, irregular, or any bleeding after menopause should be assessed. Causes range from hormonal changes to polyps or fibroids, and most are easily treated. See our pages on heavy periods and post-menopausal bleeding.
Cervical health and HPV
Regular cervical screening and HPV vaccination prevent the great majority of cervical cancers. Our HPV testing and vaccination and screening services keep this simple and routine.
When to seek help
See a specialist if your periods change significantly, if you have trouble conceiving after trying, if menopausal symptoms affect your quality of life, or if you have any bleeding after menopause. A well-woman check is a good way to stay ahead of problems.
