Embryo cryopreservation is the freezing and long-term storage of embryos for future use. Modern vitrification — an ultra-rapid freezing technique — allows embryos to be stored safely with high survival rates after thawing. Frozen embryos can later be transferred in a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycle, providing flexibility and additional opportunities from a single IVF cycle.

Important Information

  • Vitrification offers post-thaw survival rates of 95% or higher for good-quality embryos.
  • Cryopreservation is used for surplus embryos from a fresh cycle, fertility preservation, or strategic deferral of transfer.
  • In Turkey, embryos may be stored for up to 5 years, with extension possible through legally defined procedures.
  • Modern data show that FET success rates are comparable to — and in some studies higher than — fresh transfer outcomes.

Our Approach

Dr. Muzaffer values cryopreservation as a tool to give patients more chances per cycle and to time embryo transfer for the optimal endometrial environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

In Turkey, the legal storage period is up to 5 years, with extensions possible through defined procedures. Internationally, embryos can remain viable for many years.

With modern vitrification, post-thaw survival rates are typically 95% or higher for good-quality embryos.

Yes. In modern practice, FET outcomes are comparable to or, in some patient groups, even better than fresh transfer, partly due to better endometrial preparation.

Patients are notified before the storage period ends and can choose to extend storage according to legal procedures, transfer the embryos, or follow other authorized options.

International embryo transport is technically possible but subject to the legal and regulatory requirements of both countries; documentation and authorizations are required.
