NIPT and Prenatal Screening

· 2 min read

NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing) is a simple, safe blood test that screens for the most common chromosomal conditions in your baby, with no risk to the pregnancy. It is one of several screening options offered during antenatal care to give you information and reassurance.

What is prenatal screening?

Prenatal screening estimates the chance that a baby has certain conditions. Screening tests do not give a yes-or-no diagnosis; they tell you whether the chance is higher or lower, so you can decide whether to have further tests. They are always your choice.

What is NIPT?

NIPT analyses small fragments of the baby’s DNA found in the mother’s blood. From a single blood sample, usually after 10 weeks, it screens for conditions such as Down syndrome with high accuracy — and can also reveal the baby’s sex if you wish. Because it is just a blood test, there is no risk of miscarriage.

NIPT vs other tests

  • NIPT — a highly accurate screening test (a blood sample, no risk to the pregnancy).
  • Ultrasound screening — scans that assess development and markers.
  • Diagnostic tests — such as amniocentesis, which give a definite answer but carry a small risk; offered only when needed.

What if a result is “higher chance”?

A higher-chance screening result does not mean your baby has the condition. Your physician explains the next steps, which may include a detailed scan or a diagnostic test, and supports you through any decisions calmly and without pressure.

Making an informed choice

Screening is entirely optional. Some families want as much information as possible; others prefer not to test. There is no wrong choice, and your team respects your decision.
