Miscarriage is common and is never the patient’s fault. Up to one in five known pregnancies ends in loss, most often because of chromosomal factors that were beyond anyone’s control. This guide explains the facts gently and clearly.
Types of miscarriage
Terms you may hear include threatened, missed, incomplete and complete miscarriage. Your physician explains which applies to you and what it means in plain language.
How it is managed
Depending on your situation and wishes, management may be expectant (waiting), medical, or surgical (ERPC — evacuation of retained products of conception). The aim is to keep the process as safe, gentle and supported as possible.
When to investigate
After more than one loss, recurrent miscarriage management looks for treatable causes and builds a plan for a future pregnancy — sometimes with IVF and embryo genetic testing (PGT).
