PICSI and IMSI are advanced sperm-selection techniques used in IVF when sperm quality, morphology or DNA fragmentation is a concern. The method we use at UCARER is PICSI: it selects mature sperm by their natural ability to bind hyaluronic acid — the same binding that happens around the egg in nature. Your embryologist decides, cycle by cycle, whether it is likely to add value. In the largest randomised trial to date (HABSelect, 2,772 couples) PICSI lowered the miscarriage rate; a higher live-birth rate for every couple was not demonstrated. IMSI is a separate technique that relies on ultra-high magnification alone.
